Three Sisters’ Storytelling & Planting Party at Manitowoc Public Library

 Start your Three Sisters’ garden at the Manitowoc Public Library! On Wednesday, July 30, at 2 PM, join special guest Nathaniel Gerhardt from the Oneida Nation Museum for a program open to all ages and abilities. Participants will plant and take home their own small pots of corn, beans, and squash!

The Legend of the Three Sisters


Corn, beans, and squash, referred to as the Three Sisters, are cultivated, consumed, and honored together. Numerous legends about the Three Sisters exist, with nearly every Indigenous nation having its own version. These stories convey lessons about cooperation, balance, and interdependence. Just as the Sisters, depicted as individuals, depend on each other, ecosystems also flourish when different components work together in harmony. Nathaniel Gerhardt, a Cultural Educator from the Oneida Nation, will share an Oneida viewpoint on the legend of the Three Sisters, discussing the historical and cultural importance of these plants and their contemporary uses
